HackerTube is an alternative video discovery platform that eliminates algorithmic recommendations, clickbait thumbnails, and engagement traps. It populates its collection exclusively with tech talks, lectures, computer science deep dives, and documentaries that have been organically recommended by software engineers across 20 years of Hacker News comments (2007–2026).

- **No Algorithm / No Slop**: Videos are ranked and curated by real engineer upvotes and discussions, not watch-time optimization loops.
- **50% Mid-frame Thumbnails**: Replaces sensationalized YouTube thumbnails with neutral, honest frames taken from the middle (50% timestamp) of the video.
- **Privacy First**: No accounts, no user tracking, zero ads. Watch history and bookmarks are kept 100% locally in the browser's localStorage.
- **Open Data**: The entire curated catalog is available for direct download via `/api/dataset`.
